Emma Maersk

Launched in 2006, the Emma Maersk measures 397 metres - quarter of a mile – from bow to stern, or longer than the any aircraft carrier.

After months of speculation about their true capacity, AP Moller-Maersk Group has reported that the biggest ships in the company’s container fleet – which includes the world’s largest cargo vessel the Emma Maersk – have increased their cargo-carrying ability by 34 percent.

The eight mammoth container ships in the fleet, which were built between 2006 and 2008, can now carry 14,770 container units (TEU) each, according to official figures from Maersk Lines.

Previously, the shipping company had revealed that the ships had a capacity of 11,000 TEU, which still meant that they could carry far more cargo than their nearest rivals.
