The Port of Tacoma was shut down this afternoon after a longshore crane mechanic died in an industrial accident while atop a container crane at the port’s Pierce County Terminal.
Authorities are still investigating how the man died.
“It’s a long-standing tradition that when we have an accident like this,” said Longshore Local 23 President Scott Mason, “that we stand down.” The port is scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
The mechanic’s name was not being released pending notification of relatives.
