A longshoreman working at the Global Terminal was injured on Sunday when a crane lifted and dropped the truck he was driving.

Vinny Fiore, 55, of Staten Island was driving a hostler truck at Global Terminal, 302 Portal Terminal Blvd. on the border between Bayonne and Jersey City, when a crane lifted his truck “four to five feet” in the air before releasing it again.

According to the Port Authority’s report, Fiore sustained “minor (rib) injuries” and was treated at Jersey City Medical Center and was released on Monday.

Port Authority spokesman Hunter Pendarvis said, according to the report, the crane was in the process of lifting a shipping container from the back of Fiore’s hostler truck.

Pendarvis said a system of pins secures the container to the back of the truck, and the pins disengage in order to allow the a crane to lift the container. However, in this instance, it is believed the pins did not disengage and the truck was lifted along with the container.

Pendarvis said the crane operator realized what was happening and “placed” the truck back on the ground. Fiore sustained the injuries from the impact with the ground. The accident is still under investigation.
