Bunge Canada in Hamilton

Curt Besner, 47, fell 10 metres to his death while working the overnight shift on June 29, 2008, at Bunge Canada in Hamilton, Ontario, pictured here. It is the country’s largest processor of soybeans and canola seeds.

Bunge Canada Holdings was fined $80,000 Monday for fall that killed one of its workers in 2008.

Curt Besner, 47, had been working on a platform beside a hopper of soymeal when the accident occurred. The father of two lost his balance and fell over the guard rail of the work platform.

The Ministry of Labour charges stemmed from allegations the company failed to ensure a fall arrest system was used and failing to ensure a worker had sufficient training with a fall arrest system.
