Middle Harbor Project

The Middle Harbor plan will expand the three piers from 290 acres to 345 acres, and incorporate green technologies like solar paneling, electrification, low-emission cargo handling equipment and more efficient gates.

Work is under way on … the sprawling Middle Harbor redevelopment project, a 10-year, $750 million plan to expand and modernize piers D, E and F.

The first phase includes construction of a rock seawall, or dike, being built to contain a mountain of sediment between piers E and F. The sediment is the foundation of a future concrete terminal, railyard and truck staging arena.

In coming years, the new land and existing property on pier D will be modernized with new wharves, truck gates, berths, cranes and other equipment expected to facilitate a doubling of cargo through the Middle Harbor area by 2025.
