Cargill’s takeover of AWB Ltd grain business has angered Australian Liberal Senator, Bill Heffernan, who is seriously worried about what he sees as a lack of community concern about overseas control of Australian farm industry assets.

“We’re slipping back to becoming tenant farmers, or tenant farming industries – I totally disagree with the greed that is taking control of agriculture at a time when we really need to be in control of our food production destiny,” Senator Heffernan said.

He said too little was being done to ensure Australian assets as were considered in the national interest when off-shore buyers were moving in the same business circles as the referees.
