Long Beach’s plan to build a new bridge to replace the Gerald Desmond between the port and Terminal Island cleared its final hurdle Wednesday, and the search has begun for a firm to design and build the $950 million span.

In addition to a final okay from the state Transportation Commission, the Port of Long Beach came home with the final $200 million in financing for the project, according to port Executive Director Richard Steinke.

That grant brings the total of state highway and transportation bonds to be spent on the bridge to $500 million.
