Port of Morrow on the Columbia River, Oregon

The Port of Morrow on the Columbia River in Oregon is one of several ports -- including St. Helens in Oregon and Longview in Washington -- that are in play for exporting coal to Asia.

Coal companies, including a parent of the company proposing to build a terminal in Longview, are investigating the possibility of building new export terminals at two Oregon ports, according to environmental groups and press reports.

However, Millennium Bulk Terminals officials say they haven’t changed their plan to try to build a new coal terminal at the old Reynolds site in Longview.

The Port of Morrow near Boardman, Ore., recently signed a one-year lease option with Australian coal giant Ambre Energy, presumably to offload coal from trains and ship it down the Columbia River on barges, The Oregonian newspaper reported. Also, legal filings indicate that an unnamed coal company may be discussing plans to build a terminal at the Port of St. Helens.
