More than 100 longshoremen at the Port of Algiers walked out on Tuesday (January 4th) to protest new measures relating to overtime pay and added shifts, sources from the port’s trade union said.
The actual tally of striking dockers is unclear. Port officials claimed that the strike was only being observed by around one hundred dock workers. Workers disputed this number, saying that all 900 longshoremen participated in the walk-off.
The longshoremen are protesting a deal reached last July by the port management company (SOGEPORT), the national port federation and the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA).
