La Unión de Prácticos del Canal de Panamá recibe en suelo panameño al sindicato ILWU
A partir de hoy lunes 18 de abril al viernes 22 se realizará una serie de reuniones entre la Unión de Prácticos del Canal de Panamá (UPCP) y la International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU).
Este encuentro, que por primera vez se realiza en Panamá, tiene como propósito reafirmar la alianza estratégica existente entre estos dos sindicatos, la cual se basa principalmente en el noble principio de la solidaridad internacional, que ha venido como anillo al dedo en las luchas de los trabajadores alrededor del mundo, en nuestro caso, en el sector marítimo portuario.
Para el Capitán Londor Rankin, secretario general de la UPCP, estas reuniones son básicas e importantes para enfrentar los grandes poderes e intereses financieros que son los mismos que operan tanto en Panamá como en Estados Unidos.
“Debemos defender los intereses de nuestros agremiados, incluyendo sus salarios y condiciones de empleo, a la vez de ir siempre en la lucha interminable para mejorarlos”, puntualizó Rankin.
Cabe destacar que el Coast Longshore Division es, como lo indica su nombre, una División autónoma del sindicato International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU, por sus siglas en inglés), conformado principalmente por estibadores, oficinistas y capataces; distribuidos entre aproximadamente 30 locales o sindicatos, siendo los más grandes, los ubicados en Los Ángeles/Long Beach, San Francisco/Oakland, y Seattle.
Desde junio de 2012, durante la 35ª Convención de la ILWU, se perfeccionó la afiliación de la Unión de Prácticos del Canal de Panamá con esta gran organización. La misma fue el producto de la amistad que surgió entre varios miembros de ambos gremios, en los primeros años de este nuevo siglo, cuando la ILWU fue objeto de un “lockout” de manos de su contraparte, mientras estaban inmersos en la negociación de su nueva convención colectiva. La entrada de los prácticos del Canal a la familia de la ILWU, significó la creación, dentro de esa organización, del Panama Canal Division, que posteriormente, en la Convención del 2015 se fortaleció con la inclusión de los compañeros del Sindicato Industrial de Trabajadores Portuarios de Panamá y Similares, SITRAPORSPA, agrupación sindical que reúne a la mayoría de los trabajadores de los puertos de Balboa y Cristóbal.
El Capitán Rankin señaló que el hecho de que la reunión se realice en Panamá, a escasos dos meses de la inauguración del Canal ampliado, es una feliz coincidencia.
“Además, servirá para reiterar nuestra hermandad y hacerles saber a nuestras contrapartes que no estamos solos en nuestras luchas por defender los intereses de los trabajadores, y que nunca nos daremos por vencidos”, indicó el secretario general de la UPCP.

Panama Canal Pilots Union receives the International Longshore and Warehouse Union on Panamanian soil
From Monday April 18th to Friday the 22nd, a series of meetings between the Union of Panama Canal Pilots (UPCP) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) will be held.
This meeting, which is the first to take place in Panama, aims to reaffirm the existing strategic alliance between these two unions, which is mainly based on the noble principle of international solidarity, which has come in handy in the struggles of workers around the world, in this case, in the maritime port sector.
For Captain Londor Rankin, general secretary of the UPCP, these meetings are fundamental and important in confronting the major powers and financial interests that are the same that operate both in Panama and the United States.
“We must defend the interests of our members, including their wages and employment conditions, as we move forward in the endless struggle to improve them,” said Rankin.
Notably, the Coast Longshore Division is, as its name suggests, an autonomous division of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Union (ILWU, for its acronym in English), consisting mainly of stevedores, clerks and foremen; distributed among 30 local unions, the largest being located in Los Angeles/Long Beach, San Francisco/Oakland, and Seattle.
In June 2012, during the 35th Convention of the ILWU, the affiliation of the Union of Panama Canal Pilots with this great organization was completed. It was the product of the friendship that developed between several members of both unions, in the early years of this century, when the ILWU was subject to a “lockout” at the hand of their employer, while they were engaged in negotiating their new collective agreement. The entrance of the Canal pilots to the family of the ILWU meant the creation, within that organization, of the Panama Canal Division. Subsequently, at the Convention of 2015, it was strengthened with the inclusion of the companions of the Industrial Union of Dockworkers and Similar of Panama, (SINTRAPORSPA), a union grouping that brings together most workers in the ports of Balboa and Cristóbal.
Captain Rankin said the fact that the meeting is being held in Panama, just two months from the opening of the expanded Canal, is a happy coincidence.
“In addition, it serve to reiterate our brotherhood and let our employers know that we are not alone in our struggles to defend the interests of workers – and we will never give up,” said the secretary general of the UPCP.
