Truck drivers and terminal operators gathered at the Port of Los Angeles to test the newest generation of zero-emission electric trucks manufactured by Harbor City-based Balqon Corp. Port officials purchased 20 of Balqon’s Nautilus XE20 short-haul trucks to carry cargo containers from shipping terminals to nearby warehouses and rail yards. The trucks hit top speed of about 25 mph, take about six hours to fully charge and have a range of 50 to 94 miles, depending on the weight of the load.
Longshore worker Lynn Alvarez … said the truck was solid, the handling was simple and Alvarez said she didn’t inhale any exhaust fumes. “It has a different feel to it, but I think it runs great, it runs smooth and it has a lot of power. Most importantly, it’s better for our health.”
