Statement by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) on the death of Philando Castile:

ITF general secretary Stephen Cotton said: “On behalf of the five million workers we represent in 150 countries, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our union brother Philando Castile.

“Right now our thoughts are with his family and friends, but I know there is nothing I can say to relieve the tragedy that has befallen them.

“The ITF, and the global union movement we represent, stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the Teamsters and the AFL-CIO as they mourn the death of yet another young African-American man, and call for answers about what happened.”

“The union movement stands for a fairer, more equal, more tolerant society. It was founded on a struggle for social equality, and this fight had at his heart a hunger for justice founded on peace and cooperation. We must uphold these principles now, more than ever, and denounce violence in all of its forms, whoever it is visited upon.
