On Thursday, the Northwest Seaport Alliance — a partnership of the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma — announced that it will seek a full environmental review for a huge expansion of Terminal 5.
The new Terminal 5 would have bigger cranes to handle the big new ships that carry 18,000 20-foot long containers—three times as many as current ships carry.
“Upgrading Terminal 5 to handle larger vessels is critical to creating new maritime and industrial jobs for the region,” said Stephanie Bowman, co-president of the Port of Seattle, in a statement released by the Alliance. “As part of our commitment to the community, we will carefully study the environmental impacts of the terminal improvements.”
The Northwest Seaport Alliance is planning a community meeting about the Terminal 5 plan at 5:30 p.m. on November 12th at The Hall at Fauntleroy, located at 9131 California Ave. SW, Seattle.
