International Longshoremen’s Association members at Charleston have authorized a strike, but the union has not attempted to halt work at the port.
The ILA’s longshore and checkers’ locals in Charleston voted for the strike authorization last week. The vote was an apparent effort to pressure employers in negotiations for local contracts covering pensions, work rules and other port-specific issues.
Ports where local contracts remain incomplete include Baltimore, Charleston, and Mobile, Alabama.
