A Port of Tacoma security officer was seriously injured [late last month] when a semitrailer plowed into a jersey barrier at the main gate and pushed it into the man, port spokeswoman Tara Mattina said Tuesday.

The officer, who started working for the port in 1999, came through surgery well Monday, and his injuries are not life-threatening, she said.

The semitrailer apparently took the corner at Port of Tacoma Road and East 11th Street too sharply about noon and pushed the barrier into the officer’s leg, Mattina said. The officer was outside the security booth at the gate, possibly preparing to check the driver’s credentials, according to the port.

Tacoma police were investigating the crash as an injury accident, Mattina said.
