An APM Terminals executive said that GPS would allow its Apapa terminal to be ‘pedestrian free’ and should become operational early next year.

APM Terminals Apapa Limited is [finalizing plans to introduce] a satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) for containers at its terminal.

Dallas Hampton, managing director, APM Terminals Apapa, said the new GPS, the first of its kind in the world, would aid multi-level container inspection facility for physical examination of containers by Customs operatives.

“Manual systems cannot achieve much more than 90 percent accuracy,” he said. “The GPS system will also enable the use of further technologies such as NAVIS Prime Route and Expert Decking which are advanced real time IT systems that can improve terminal yard efficiency. These systems combined will enable the terminal to have complete pedestrian free yards,” he said.
