The Port of Oakland announced it is undertaking actions to cope with stalled contract negotiations with Service Employees International Union Local 1021.

The agreement between the union and the Oakland port expired June 30, 2011. The union represents 250 janitorial, maintenance and security workers.

The port and SEIU had reached and signed a tentative agreement for a new contract in late March, but SEIU members rejected the tentative agreement when they voted in April.
