Trucks at Long Beach

In most cases, the company's 18-wheel trucks carrying 40-foot containers to the Port of Long Beach were 10,000 pounds or more over an 80,000 pound weight limit, according to city officials.

Oakland-based Pacific Coast Container Inc. has agreed to pay more than $460,000 to settle charges that it transported grossly overweight loads, the City Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday.

The company pleaded no contest to 47 misdemeanor counts of not following regulations governing vehicle weight.

“Overweight vehicles are unsafe for our roads,” said City Prosecutor Doug Haubert.

“They are dangerous because they create potholes for motorists and they can’t brake in time when traffic slows.”

The City Prosecutor’s Office filed the case in January after unsuccessful attempts to persuade Pacific Coast Container to comply with the law.
