Jan. 24: Long Beach city leaders green-lighted a study of port-connected air pollution effects on nearby neighborhoods.

The “Air Quality Impact Zone” plan, proposed by council members James Johnson, Suja Lowenthal and Robert Garcia, will evaluate existing studies on Port of Long Beach-connected air pollution in West Long Beach, Los Cerritos, Wrigley, Central Long Beach and downtown. The evaluation would also examine noise, light and aesthetic effects, engage the public, and develop a master plan to use in key planning documents.

Johnson said a plan could lead to millions of dollars in local, state and federal dollars to help allay port impacts.
