A proposed 153-acre rail yard that’s been under negotiation for six years at the Port of Los Angeles is raising the ire of Harbor Area and Long Beach residents who claim the $500 million project will increase pollution, noise and traffic in their communities.
To alleviate [residents’] concerns, trucks will be equipped with GPS devices and required to operate on industrial roads leading to the facility, said Lena Kent, a BNSF spokeswoman.
Additionally, BNSF plans to use electric cranes and low-emission locomotives at the new rail yard, while all big rigs entering the facility would be required to meet 2007 federal emissions standards, Kent said.
