Shipping is picking up steam on the trans-Pacific, but it’s not happening in the direction carriers are accustomed to. Instead, import growth is tapering off as the peak season approaches.

Containerized imports in the first five months of 2011 grew 5.5 percent compared to the same period last year, according to numbers compiled by PIERS, a sister company of The Journal of Commerce.

U.S. exports, meanwhile, are growing rapidly.
