Island native Benny Holland Jr. … replaces Harold J. Daggett, who this week succeeded the association’s president, Richard P. Hughes. Hughes earlier this year said he would not seek re-election as president of the association, which represents more than 65,000 longshoremen on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Great Lakes, major U.S. rivers, Puerto Rico and Eastern Canada.
Holland, who island waterfront observers say has fought to generate jobs without alienating industry, becomes executive vice president at a time when competition from nonunion labor intensifies in a difficult economy.
