The federal government will give the Port of Oakland $18 million in the next fiscal year to help the port keep its shipping channel 50 feet deep, the port announced this week.

The money is being distributed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will be used by the port to maintain its vital channel, which has undergone a 10-year-long deepening project to allow the port to continue attracting the large container ships essential for its survival.
