Dick Winters, who was born in a logging tent and rose to become a successful log exporter and land developer, died Thursday at his home in Toledo at age 85.
He was the president of Wasser & Winters Co., which he started from scratch in 1961.
“Wasser & Winters was the first log-yard tenant at the port,” said Ken O’Halloran, executive director at the Port of Longview. “Dick was really credited with beginning the modern log export trade. … He certainly played a large role in developing that important line of business for the Port of Longview.”
