Puget Sound’s container ports are surrounded by hungry sharks, from the Canadian Port of Prince Rupert to all the recently expanded ports on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, all wanting to grab away import cargo.
“The battlegrounds are in the Ohio Valley, the Memphis area, the St. Louis area,” said John Martin, president of maritime consultancy Martin Associates, explaining that these are regions where other ports could draw away cargo that Puget Sound ports have for years shipped east by rail.
