It’s still too early to tell exactly what the overall impact Japan’s set of disasters will have on the Los Angeles economy. That’s what some economists and city officials told a Los Angeles City Council hearing Monday in San Pedro.
Katherine McDermott of the Port of Los Angeles said cargo to and from Japan represents about 800 of the almost 10,000 longshore worker jobs at the Port of L.A..
“And we wouldn’t expect that those longshore labor jobs are all at risk of disappearing,” said McDermott. “They’re all important to us, obviously, but we do know that there’s still cargo coming out of the largest ports in Japan.”
