The ILWU Coast Longshore Division has supported Costa Rica’s SINTRAJAP dockworkers in the face of the union’s abuse from their government, including a declaration from the former Minister of Public Works that “Limón will have a dock that has absolutely no relationship with unions or collective bargaining agreements.” Having failed to destroy the dockworkers’ union with bribes and a public relations war, the government is now taking a different tack, as reported in Business News America:
A new container terminal in Costa Rica’s eastern Limón province will have capacity to handle 2.7mn TEUs, APM Terminals’ director of Central and South American investments told BNamericas.
President Laura Chinchilla signed a concession agreement with APM Terminals on Tuesday (March 1) to build and operate the new port. The terminal will require an investment of US$992mn, Gallie told BNamericas in a previous interview.
The new port will be developed some 10km from the existing Moín and Limón port terminals and involves a construction area of 1,500m2. It will have capacity to handle Panamax vessels carrying cargo of up to 65,000t.
