A fumigation container has exploded at Wellington’s port this morning.
The blast occurred shortly before 5am at the south end of CentrePort on Aotea Quay, waking many residents.
It caused a fire which was fought by crews from five fire trucks. The fire was now under control.
The container held a car which had just arrived from overseas. The Fire Service said no one was believed to have been injured in the blast.
Buildings at the port remained cordoned off and the head office of CentrePort was closed.
