The Port of Grays Harbor, just a few years ago a sleepy commercial backwater in international trade, reported Monday that exports surged last year by 85 percent over 2009.
New exports of soybean meal, distillers dried grains, autos and logs raised port volumes to more than 1.5 million metric tons last year on 106 vessels.
The booming business has had positive effects on jobs. The Longshore Union’s roster in Grays Harbor last year increased by 35 percent.
