Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) workers at Patrick’s bulk and general cargo facilities in Geelong will take the protected action, beginning with reduced shifts at the weekend and a 24-work stoppage on Monday.
The MUA says the strike comes after failed negotiations with management over a new enterprise bargaining agreement seeking better training, more permanent staff, safety improvements and pay increases.
MUA national secretary Paddy Crumlin said bulk and general stevedoring is very dangerous and workers would no longer risk their lives until management came up with a clear commitment to safety.
“Workers at the country’s bulk and general cargo facilities are literally risking their lives,” Mr Crumlin said.
Workers at Melbourne’s Webb Dock are supporting the action by banning the transfer of workers to cover Geelong shifts.
