Punta Colonet is 120 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to media reports, Punta Colonet will take advantage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free trade agreement between countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The Trans-Pacific Partnership will link US markets with Asian exporters, which will allow Mexico to compete with the ports of Long Beach and Panama.

The government will invest approximately two billion dollars for the development of the container port. Construction of the port will begin in 2011.
