Delays in shipments of bagged sugar at main Brazilian sugar port Santos due to a work slowdown are considered minimal, sources at a shipping agency and at a private terminal said on Wednesday. The labor action started on Monday morning and will last for an undetermined time.
Workers are demanding increases in wages, participation in profits and other benefits, said Rodnei Oliveira da Silva, president at Santos’ Longshoremen Union, which has around 9,000 stevedores and other port workers as members.
From July through September, sugar exports reached record volumes of around 3 million tonnes monthly.
