Transport unions have expressed concerns that Australian employers are trying to conduct crane operations without the use of a hatchman. This is a safety role taken by a dock worker when crane operators do not have an adequate view of the all aspects of the operations. The hatchman acts as extra ‘eyes’ for the crane operator.
Current MUA advice to all dock workers who have been asked to work without a hatchman is to “stop the job”. Comment has been sought from industry body Ports Australia, which has advised that it will contact its members to provide a response in due course.
