Log exports begin this week at the Port of Astoria.
In fact, logs are already being unloaded at Pier 1, said Roger Nance, vice president with Westerlund Log Handlers, at a Port of Astoria Commission meeting Tuesday night.
A partial first shipment is set to be loaded to go to South Korea at the beginning of November, between Nov. 2 and Nov. 5. This first run is a dry run, hence a “partial” shipment – about 1 million to 1.5 million board feet, one third, Nance said, of what would constitute a full shipment.
Beginning in December, Nance said the company plans to send out one ship per month with China as the export destination.
