The Port of Jacksonville won’t be able to handle the larger container ships when the expanded Panama Canal opens in late 2014, but nor will the Port of Savannah, according to the Associated Press.

Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz said the $588 million deepening project necessary to handle larger ships at Savannah won’t be ready until 2015. The Army Corps said the soonest fully loaded, bigger ships that are able to pass through the expanded Panama Canal will be able to access Jacksonville is 2016.
