The Port of Los Angeles has received a $731,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to purchase new technology aimed at reducing harmful diesel emissions from gantry cranes, officials announced Wednesday.
Plans calls for replacing a 685-horsepower diesel engine on a gantry crane with a downsized 105-horsepower diesel engine that charges a battery pack. The EcoCrane, produced by EcoPower Hybrid Systems, reduces particulate matter up to 85 percent and greenhouse gases up to 70 percent, port officials said.
