Dredging up the dirt at the Port of Long Beach [started] Tuesday morning as city and federal officials gathered to officially kick off the $40 million Main Channel Deepening Project. The project will improve navigation in the channel, which passes beneath the Gerald Desmond Bridge, allow tankers to come in fully loaded, and provide about 180 jobs over 17 months.
