The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay about 165 miles south of Portland, may one day develop a container terminal that can handle the 8,000-TEU class vessels that are common now in the trans-Pacific trade, but a channel-deepening project needed to accommodate the mega-ships will not happen until mid-decade.

Executives of global shipping lines, reportedly including Maersk Line, have looked at Coos Bay as a possible container hub on the West Coast. The port at present handles breakbulk cargoes such as wood chips.
