Port of Long Beach at night
A program aimed at encouraging shippers to haul more cargo through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach during late nights and weekends has led to the diversion of more than 15 million trucks over the past five years. … As a result, commuters have encountered fewer big rigs on the bustling Long Beach (710) and Harbor (110) freeways during the daytime since the program began in July 2005, said the president and CEO of the nonprofit PierPass, based in Long Beach.
“While PierPass has been successful, it’s probably time for the industry to re-examine the program,” said Geraldine Knatz, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. “Shippers are raising issues about inconsistent scheduling of night gates. And during the economic downturn, PierPass fees have been used against us by our competitors.”
