Cargo handled by the Port of Seattle has increased in the past four months, a sharp reversal of the trend earlier in the year, while cargo at the Port of Tacoma is continuing to decline with the weak economy. A key reason is that several ocean carriers are moving more cargo through the Port of Seattle, some of that at Tacoma’s expense, a port spokesperson. Also, some of the increased cargo through Seattle is being diverted from Southern California as shippers seek to avoid higher costs created by the truck air quality program there.
