Matson Navigation Co.’s container traffic to and from Hawaii is on course this year to finish lower than in 2001, a reflection of the downturn in construction and the economy in general. Hawaii’s largest shipping company’s container volume is one highly visible indicator of the state economy, carrying more boxes of construction materials and more vehicles when tourism and investment in the state is up, and fewer when those numbers are down.
