Bryce Olson, a commodity marketer at Pendleton Grain Growers, sees an “interesting year” ahead. “The grass seed market is still low,” Olson said. “There’ve been estimates of 400,000 acres that are going to be planted in wheat in the Willamette Valley. Most of those 400,000 acres have been in grass seed or other crops. What that causes is basically a huge supply of wheat in Portland at the time of harvest.” … Olson also is concerned about the 16-week closure of Columbia River dams for maintenance beginning in December 2010. “How many bushels are we going to be able to ship before that river closes?” he wondered aloud.
