Norwegian shipping tycoon John Fredriksen plans to set up a low-cost container shipping line modelled on budget airlines, his top aide told Reuters on Thursday. “We could start out with 10-20 ships,” Troim said, adding “the investment depends on what kind of tonnage we get access to”. Fredriksen’s plan is to make money by offering less extensive services than big shipping lines do. “Direct transportation also brings down costs,” Troim said, adding that the new venture will have a price advantage of “much more” than 10-20 percent. He declined to be more specific.
